Installing a custom ROM(flashing) on Huawei ideos U8150/T-Mobile Comet.NB: Before flashing your phone(installing a custom ROM), ensure that it has adequate charge to avoid it. Also be fully aware that this will void it of its warranty and may even brick it therefore do this at your own discretion.What is a Custom ROM?A custom ROM is an alternative to the firmware(stock ROM) of your phone. It is an upgrade to your smartphone’s operating system; for example there are froyo, gingerbread and even ice cream sandwich variants for the Huawei U8150/T-Mobile Comet.

A custom ROM generally improves the phones performance and user interface though this varies. Some allow for overclocking the processor from the stock 600MHz to an outstanding 768MHz, others change the splash screen, others increase battery life, improve audio-visual performance, multi-touch, among others.Flashing your phone will completely erase all its data. In case you want to back up your apps, you may use install into your phone from Google Play store and make the necessary backups. Use to backup your messages and to backup your contacts. You can also sync your phone contacts with your Google account for a cloud backup.Steps to follow when installing a custom ROM. Ensure your phone is rooted.

If it isn’t rooted, follow. Also ensure you have enough space on your micro SD card: 400 MB is recommended. Choose a ROM to download from this. You may want to read on a ROM’s capabilities and user comments before downloading to avoid frustrations. Some have higher clock speeds while others are more stable. My favourite one is FUSIONideos as it is very stable, allows for overclocking the phone up to 748MHz, increases internal memory, displays battery percentage among other capabilities.

You can check it out. After downloading the custom ROM, ensure it is in your microSD card. Download a custom recovery tool. We are going to be working with UltraJack Recovery v6.2.2. Extract the folder in your computer.

Enable USB debugging on your phone. To do this, go to settings - Applications - Development - USB debugging ✓. Turn off your phone. Immediately, put it into bootloader mode by pressing the power button + volume down + end call button all together for about 7 seconds. It will be stuck on the IDEOS screen.

Plug in the phone to the computer. It should install the necessary drivers. If it doesn’t, download PDAnet and install it on your PC. Go to the folder you extracted ultrajack and click “install-recovery-windows.bat”. If it installed, it should reboot by itself. When rebooting, it seems to freeze but this is normal, so wait for it to load.

In case you want to backup your old ROM, follow this procedure. This. Shut down your phone and put it into recovery mode by pressing the power+volume up+ start call (green)button at the same time and hold them for 7 seconds. A screen with the Huawei logo in the background will appear.

Navigate and select options using the D-Pad. Use the volume down key to go back. Select ‘Flash zip from sdcard’ then select ‘Choose zip from sdcard’. Navigate to the zip file(that is the ROM), select it and ‘Press Trackball to confirm’. The ROM will install itself for a few minutes therefore be patient. This process is generally referred to as flashing a phone.

Once the ROM is done installing, go back to the main menu and select ‘Reboot system now’. The phone will take a while to start. This is because it will be writing dalvik cache files but this is a one time process. You may notice a change in the boot animation depending on the ROM you flashed. In this post, I will teach you how to Install custom-roms to your Ideos. In this tutorial we shall upgrade your Ideos to Gingerbread.Some of the procedures highlighted herein may result in voiding yourphone’s manufacturer’s & service provider’s warranty. I am notresponsible in any way for this.

Know the risks involved beforeattempting. Failure to stick to the guidelines may result in you bricking your phone.Requirements. Make sure you have rooted your Huawei IDEOS U8150. If you don’t know how then read about it (I personally recommend the SuperoneClick method and not the one using Unlock Root.).

Download the Gingerbread ROM. Do so here ,(ROM available for download is Gingerman v 6.5 (the most stable ROM Ihave tested) and its multitouch file. Note that this ROM will make yourdevice lose support for FM radio transmission). This will upgrade yourIDEOS to Gingerbread 2.3.4. You can find ROMs for the other Gingerbreadupdates (2.3.5, 2.3.6, 2.3.7) in various Android development and hackerforums like XDA Developers). I know many have tried to click that updateoption in the settings section of the Huawei IDEOS U8150 but beendisappointed when that bogus message “Your device already has the latestAndroid version” appears even though you know that Froyo is not thelatest Android OS.

This is because there is no official update of theHuawei U8150 IDEOS firmware so we have no choice but to rely on customROMs from third party developers like CyanogenMod. Once you have downloaded the custom ROMs which are in.zip format,save them on your sd card (Not inside any folder or other file but atthe root of your sd card).Procedure. Go to Google Play store from your phone, preferably via the official Android app.

Download and install the. For the next step make sure you have at least 200 Mb of free space on your sd card. Make sure you have an active data connection. Run the application and Click Flash ClockworkMod Recovery andchoose your device model.

In this case, Huawei U8150 IDEOS. (Manypeople have been telling me that their phone’s make and model is notbeing detected properly. Use the most recent version of the ROM Managerapplication and this won’t be an issue. I have always been using thevery latest version of ROM Manager and I have never had my devicemissing from the drop-down list. As of the time of the publication ofthis blog, the latest version of the app is v5.0.0.6). Once your devicehas been correctly detected and you have selected it from the drop-downlist, wait while your device is flashed. Click ‘Flash ClockworkMod Recovery’ and ensure you have an active data connection.

Once you have flashed your device, you should backup your current ROM (commonly referred to as a nandroid backup) just in case things don’t work and you are forced to revert to your older ROM. I highly recommend you do a backup. Ifyou are experienced in doing this, like me, you can ignore. I alwaysskip this step and just flash a new ROM; however it is almost a must forany newbie to this process.

Do a nandroid backup just incase things go horribly wrong. What you have backed up is your entire ROM, theone you are currently using, the stock ROM. To backup all your apps andtheir specific data please download and install the Titanium Backup app.

This app is for root users only so install this app once youyour device. It will help you backup everything to your sd card so thatyou can restore your apps and their relevant data e.g Facebook logincredentials, contact and many others.

After successful flashing and backing up of yourdevice’s data, you will then need to enter your phone into recoverymode. This can be done in two ways: 1) By using the Reboot into Recovery option in the ROM Manager app or 2)Switchingoff your phone then pressing the power-on button, the volume up buttonand the call answer up button (the green button). Once in recovery mode, use the volume up and volume down buttons toscroll through the options. You can also use the phone’s middle buttonto scroll up and down. Select Advanced then select Wipe Dalvik Cache. Confirm that you want to wipe your Dalvik cache.

This will wipe your device’s Dalvik cache. Go back to the main recovery menu using the phones’ default Android back button. Select wipe cache partition. Confirm that you want to wipe the cache partition.

This will wipe your phone’s cache. Still on the main recovery menu, select wipe data/factory reset. Confirm that you want to do a factory reset. Here is the most important part. On the main menu of ClockworkMod recovery, select the install zip from sdcard option.

Select choose zip from sdcard in the next window. You will be taken to a screen/window showing the contents of your sdcard. Scroll down to your downloaded custom ROM and select it. Confirmthat you want to install it.

Wait while your custom ROM is installed. Take note that in the custom ROMs I have provided for downloadabove, there are two files: the main custom ROM LINK 1 and amultitouch file LINK 2. I recommend that you install the first file(the custom ROM itself) and the second file (the multitouch file)immediately after. Because some variants of the Huawei U8150 IDEOS(more so those shipped before June 2011) need multitouch for the phoneto be able to boot properly after the custom ROM has been installed.

Once the installation is complete, press the back button and select reboot system now. You should wait for between 7 to 10 minutes for your device to bootup properly using the newly installed custom ROM. If it does not boot upin that duration, then redo the whole process. It means you missedsomething somewhere. Check that you have followed all the stepscorrectly more so procedure 14. Once it has booted successfully, you will be taken through the familiar steps of logging into your Android device. That’s it!

You have successfully installed a custom ROM on yourHuawei IDEOS U8150. If you have used the custom ROMs I have shared,which I highly recommend you use, then welcome to the Gingerbread club,you have just successfully upgraded your IDEOS U8150 to Android 2.3.4from Android 2.2, 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 (Froyo). To confirm that you indeed have successfully upgraded to Gingerbread or that the custom ROM has been installed properly, go to Settings About Phone and make sure you can see the correct Android version and build number. One more thing, sometimes after successfully flashing a custom ROM,the battery stats may not be accurate.

To correct this anomaly, headover to the Google Play store and download an application forcalibrating your device battery, Thereare many battery calibrating applications but I recommend this one.Install the app and follow the instructions it gives you.There are many ROMs out there but the ones I have shared (Gingermanv6.5.1 and its multitouch) are the most stable Gingerbread upgrades forthe IDEOS that I have come across and I used them for over 3 months in2011 before I disposed off my Huawei IDEOS U8150.
