I have just installed Win7 Home Premium on a Toshiba Satellite 1410 – it has 512Mb mem a Celeron 1.6Ghz processor. I replaced the 20Gb HDD with a 160Gb and use Ultimate defrag and Registry Mechanic to tune it up. The 1410 came with XP, and with the basic recovery disk system ran OK. The problem for me came with the updates and particularly the service pack 2 – which seemed to make the laptop sluggish.Win 7 seems better – I get a more up to date operating system, and even after updates, the system is still better, though I can't prove it with figures, and I'm not going towaste my time reinstalling XP just to prove it.
Since I use it as a backup, I appreciate only needing programs for one OS. I edit a newsletter and use Pageplus X4 for this and it runs this just fine. I also use Photoshop CS3 on my main PC but have not tried this on the Toshiba-a step too far!I have 85 Gb of Music on it and use it connected to an amp as a juke box/MP3 playerThe only difficulty I had was with the sound drivers, but that was soon sorted.
It is not as snappy as my 3.2GHz main PC, but entirely useable. I am so pleased with it that I am installing a 320Gb HDD in it next week – because its worth it.
